NoteLabs Side Notes is a local-first note-taking extension for Google Chrome. This policy explains what information the extension handles and how it is used.
Information handled by NoteLabs
NoteLabs handles the notes, titles, formatting, preferences, and imported backup files that you choose to create or open in the extension. This is user-generated content.
If you choose to use dictation, NoteLabs requests access to your microphone while dictation is active. Dictation is required to run through Chrome's on-device speech recognition. If the required local language pack is unavailable, NoteLabs does not start dictation. Chrome may download that language pack when the user starts the feature, but microphone audio remains on the device. NoteLabs does not upload, retain, or transmit microphone audio to NoteLabs, Google, or another speech-recognition service.
If you choose to use writing help, Chrome may first download the required on-device language model. The selected text or note text is then processed on your device. NoteLabs does not send prompts, note text, or AI output to the developer, a NoteLabs server, or a third-party AI service.
NoteLabs supports Chrome's spell-check feature in editable text fields. With Chrome's Basic Spell Check, checking occurs locally. If you have enabled Enhanced Spell Check in Chrome, text typed or pasted into NoteLabs may be sent to Google for spelling suggestions under Google's applicable privacy terms. NoteLabs does not receive or control this information.
Storage
Notes and preferences are stored locally in the extension's private browser storage on your device. NoteLabs does not operate a server, create a NoteLabs account, synchronize notes, or transmit the note library to the developer.
Users may export their library to a local JSON backup file and import a backup file manually. NoteLabs only accesses a file when the user explicitly selects it for import. An exported backup is saved to the download location the user or browser chooses and exists independently of the extension.
Collection, sharing, and sale
Through the NoteLabs extension itself, the developer does not collect or receive note content, microphone audio, browsing history, personal information, analytics, or usage data. The developer does not sell, rent, or share extension data. NoteLabs contains no advertising, analytics, tracking, or telemetry technology.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
NoteLabs' handling of user data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. User data handled by the extension is used only within the user's browser to provide the user-facing note-taking functionality described in this policy.
NoteLabs does not use or transfer user data for advertising, behavioral profiling, purposes unrelated to the extension's single note-taking purpose, determining creditworthiness, or making lending decisions.
Support communications
If a user voluntarily contacts the developer by email, the developer receives the sender's email address and any information the user chooses to include in the message. This information is used only to respond to and address the support request. It is not sold or used for advertising, behavioral profiling, creditworthiness, or lending decisions. Support email is separate from data handled locally by the NoteLabs extension.
Permissions
sidePanelallows NoteLabs to appear in Chrome's side panel.-
unlimitedStorageallows a large local text library to remain available without the normal extension-storage quota. - NoteLabs requests microphone access only when the user starts dictation. Chrome displays and manages the permission request, and access can be revoked in Chrome settings.
NoteLabs does not request access to browsing history, tabs, website content, cookies, or all websites.
Retention and deletion
Notes remain in the extension's local browser storage until the user deletes them or removes the extension. Removing NoteLabs through Chrome removes the extension's own local storage in accordance with Chrome's uninstall behavior. Previously exported JSON backup files are stored independently at the location chosen by the user or browser and are not automatically removed when NoteLabs is uninstalled. Users must delete those exported files themselves if they no longer want to retain them.
Changes
If NoteLabs' data practices materially change, this policy and the extension's disclosures will be updated before the changed behavior is released.
